IMDA Receives a complaint about an ‘Independent Dealer’, How would you approach this?

The Chairman, Umesh Samani received a call today from a very angry and disgruntled ‘potential buyer’ of a BMW M2, who was not happy with the independent dealers’ ‘attitude’!

The caller went to say he’d been searching for a car for some months and was narrowing it down, he had a fantastic experience with a franchise dealer who had collected him from the train station, let him test drive the car, very helpful salesman overall bur the car wasn’t ticking all the boxes as he’d not quite what exact car he wanted.

He spotted his ‘idea’ car at the independent dealer and requested the test drive, the dealer said we can arrange this, however we need £2000 deposit to test drive the car and if you don’t like it/buy it after the test drive we’ll refund you the £2000 back!

Obviously not happy being told this, he was about to hit Google reviews with 1* and state the dealer’s attitude and how unprofessional they were, he felt! He went to Google and found the IMDA and wanted to know what the association had to say about it.

So before we give you the chairman’s conversation, what do you think?

  • I am finding test drives a bit hit and miss at the moment. Its very surprising how some are just carrying on regardless of the pandemic and expecting to jump in cars for a drive before they have really decided to commit to a purchase or have funds in place to facilitate a purchase.. I myself had a 1 star google review after asking someone to leave my premises for such reasons I felt my health wasn’t worth the risk. for a speculative test drive.
On another occasion the other week I let someone go on his own, only for him to return after being gone for an hour, I was livid !!
I think there is two sides to every story and we are all trying our best but unfortunately some of the public just don’t get it.

  • Firstly was this a down payment, deposit or just a what. It was not a charge for a service ie a test drive fee. What I am saying how did the dealer explain to the customer the reason for the fee. If one does the job right from the start the test drive should be a offer to the customer to purchase the vehicle. Not another reason for the customer to walk. If someone came to me and said can you pay a £2,000 pound payment and if you don’t buy you will get it back straight away. WHATS THE POINT IN THE PAYMENT. Hope the dealer rethinks this point because they will lose more than they will win.
